From the desert hot weather cycling gear and dry areas of Argentina to low altitudes in Peru, we entered the humid heat of the Amazon jungle, arrived under the strong sun in northeastern Brazil and faced endless increases in the heat of the lands. With so much time pedaling with the sun boiling the brains, we took 6 tips to pedal better in the direct heat of the pocket soaked in sweat.

  1. Drink water before you feel thirsty

Try to take regular breaks during the pedal for water, relax for a few minutes, rest your butt on the saddle and enjoy the scenery. If you do not feel thirsty, have your cell wake up for every half hour, for example, until you form the habit and increase the amount of water you can ingest gradually, but do not overdo it either. This interval of time and the amount of water ingested will depend on the intensity of your pedaling, the temperature and humidity of the air. There are several articles on the internet explaining why it is recommended to drink water before you feel thirsty, even in a daily life without exercise.

If the water is dubious in the region you are pedaling, substitute with fruit rich in liquids, it is filtered water, energized and flavored by nature. This way even gives way to get away from industrial isotonic without fear of dehydration because it’s hot weather cycling gear!

  1. Feed before you feel hungry

In addition to affecting the mood and cause “climate”, if you are pedaling accompanied, leave to feed only when you feel hungry can bring consequences to your body, one of them is the decrease of your energy to pedal. Sometimes we do not notice that we are feeling tired, or our legs are too heavy, due to the lack of a quick break for a snack.   1. Choose foods rich in nutrients and water.

If you consume very dry foods, such as dehydrated fruits, nuts, cereal bars, bread, etc., increase your fluid intake to compensate. Dehydration is a very unpleasant thing to do on a bike trip, it happens even when you take care to drink water frequently, and it can get in the way of your plans, research the subject and prevent yourself from this trouble! Try to have a whey powder envelope in your first aid kit.

  1. Pay attention to your breathing, breathe in through your nose and exhale through the mouth to help cool the air entering through the lung.

Primarily on a long ascent under the full blazing sun, this breathing technique has helped us a lot and makes an incredible difference. Inspiring through the nose and exhaling through the mouth, the lungs will have cool air at each breath, and the hot air that the body expels will not reheat the path the new air will travel through the nasal passages. We feel in our experience that this breathing technique softens the body’s warmth, giving us more endurance on days of extreme heat and immensely helping to pedal climb up.

  1. Wear long clothing with a sun protection factor.

So you do not have to remember to reapply solar lotion every two hours and still will not feel the blazing scorching sun directly on the skin. On a bicycle trip, it is common to spend hours and hours cycling without finding a friendly shade, sometimes not even to rest, and it is quite uncomfortable to reapply sunscreen every two hours or less. We prefer the physical barrier, we adopt a more elongated flap in the helmet, which protects the entire face, and we wear long, light-colored clothes and gloves, in this way we never burn from the sun.

  1. Dress the water bottles in wet socks

Following the same principle of sweating, whose function is to regulate body temperature, we will always have fresh water to take, because, with the evaporation of the water contained in the wet half that casually covers the caramanhola (bottle of water), its contents never heat up!  When the heat is extreme and the humidity in the air is too low, we also wet a bandana or T-shirt to cover the nose and mouth, and often wet part of the clothing where the sun does not touch directly, such as arms, the front of the trunk and pants legs. With the wind generated by the displacement of the bicycle, the moisture evaporates and cools our body even more than sweat; causing an effect we call “cyclist air conditioning”.
